Ubisoft should make a Pirates of the Caribbean game

Pirates of the Caribbean. One of the most popular rides in Disney theme parks, a huge movie franchise that despite some stumbles, Disney still wants to make work to the point they are reportedly making plans for a new entry, possibly without Jack Sparrow the movie’s most iconic character.

Ubisoft, one of the biggest game companies in the world, really really wants to make a kickass pirate game. They’ve ever so slowly inserted seafaring elements into their premiere franchise Assassin’s Creed, and have been trying to make a full-blown pirate adventure happen for a while now (Skull and Bones may never actually see the light of day at the rate it’s going).

Now granted, Ubisoft is definitely going to be busy with not only their other projects but the previously confirmed Star Wars game, but hey they are a big company with a lot of projects always going on, and I really think the Ubisoft style is a perfect match for a Pirates of the Caribbean game.

Despite being such a hot franchise, Pirates of The Caribbean has never had anything close to a good game. There have been a couple of entries that were not terrible but nothing memorable to be sure (at least in a good way). There was in fact, a game that might have changed all this, Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned:

Sadly, this very promising-looking game (which in fact drew favorable comparisons to Assassin’s Creed) was canceled by Disney. But that was 2009/10. Things were very different for Disney and how it used its properties in video games. Now we are in 2022 and after deciding the best way to make use of its many, many properties for video games was to let other companies just use the license and do all the hard work, it seems like the perfect timing to develop a new Pirates of the Caribbean title, tied to the franchise and its world but not necessarily any one movie or even sets of movies.

So, the answer is pretty simple here, Disney has a huge pirate franchise they want to re-invent and re-invigorate, Ubisoft has been wanting to do some big pirate action game for quite a long time, and they already have a current working relationship with Disney, these two crazy mega corporations should get together and work something out.

I especially feel the well-established formula of Assassin’s Creed infused with more pirate-like and swashbuckling elements would be a welcome change to something that is starting to feel pretty stale as someone who’s spent at least 100 hours each on the last three entries.

This also goes into the idea that hey, Disney is far more than Star Wars and Marvel, it has a ton of properties that could be bolstered, re-invigorated, or revived with a good video game tie-in that’s not some half-assed mobile game (I’d be fine with a good mobile game honestly but those are lacking as well). The video game industry, in general, is severely lacking in good pirate games, let’s bring them back in a big way with a AAA game based on a huge franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean.

That’s all for today, I will definitely be back next week with at least one new entry so see ya real soon!
