The Next Marvel vs. Capcom game needs to embrace the Multiverse…

The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is here, it absolutely rocks and it’s something even if you are a casual fan of Marvel, Capcom, fighting games, or great retro collections you should pick up on your platform of choice (but beware Justin Long online).

It’s arguable that had this collection not been well-received that would be the absolute final nail in the coffin for the franchise that definitely stumbled hard with Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. But since Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection has already been a smash right out of the gate, interest in a new entry in the franchise has picked up in a big way.

But what would a new entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom series be? To really spark excitement and not just be another entry in the series with little to no iteration. If it’s basically just Marvel vs. Capcom 2/3 with a new roster I feel that won’t really hit the sweet spot the series needs to actually make a comeback.

So what I propose is based around a word we are unfortunately all really tired of at this point but still would be exciting if implemented properly into a fighting game of this style: The Multiverse!

Yes, even beyond the MCU, multiverses have been a thing in lots of other movies, shows, and even some videogames. It’s a very pervasive concept right now and as such people are tired of the gimmick which I totally get. However, I still feel this would be the right move for a new Marvel vs. Capcom game adding a lot of crazy possibilities for team-ups and match-ups.

Now, what would make this interesting is that it wouldn’t just be different versions of Marvel characters, but also different versions of Capcom characters. Granted I’m not enough of an expert to know how different say Spider-Man is in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Spider-Man in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 but there is always tweaks and balances and new moves given and some old moves taken so it’s definitely different.

And that would be the expected route. A game that has a multi-verse as a focus could have multiple variants on characters that are entirely new, which could really change things up in incredibly fun and interesting ways.

I’m not saying this is a slam-dunk or easy thing to do, but I really feel if Capcom doesn’t want Marvel vs. Capcom to be a series that is just a retro collection now and bring in into the modern day and have it be a continuing series again, they need something big, flashy, risky and wild and embracing the multiverse concept would be a great way to do it.

That’s it for today. Next week, we have the highly anticipated remake, Epic Mickey Rebrushed coming out so definitely look for something about that (I actually have ideas for multiple entries surrounding it) and see ya real soon!
