Star Wars: Empire At War should be the next Star Wars game to get a remaster…
In the last few years, a ton of older Star Wars games have gotten the remaster treatment and been re-released on modern platforms, sometimes with pretty significant improvements. The latest of these was just announced with Nightdive Studios remaking Star Wars: Dark Forces, a great FPS in its day that while still easily available on PC, isn’t available on other modern platforms and is barely playable in its current form on modern PCs so this remake is sorely needed to enjoy it today.
Star Wars: Dark Forces is hardly the only game that is in this position. Many games are still readily available on PC but if they are more than a decade old and haven’t received much in the way of official updates or especially have a healthy fan community working on mods, they aren’t a great experience today.
This brings me to Star Wars: Empire at War. Empire at War is a very unique Star Wars title in that it’s an RTS game. It’s not the only Star Wars game to have tried this, but it’s rare and it is by far the best one. But being that it is a game from 2006 and hasn’t been significantly updated since then, it just suffers from the ravages of time. There are lots of improvements that could be made from simple UI and general quality of life improvements that are standard today to adapting it to play on controllers on modern consoles and the standard graphical and performance improvements that would hopefully come with any good remaster (Empire at War would probably be fantastic on Switch if it runs well).
Remaking Empire at War also might be a good way to get people hyped for the idea of Respawn’s upcoming Star Wars strategy game as again, a strategy game in this setting is not what people are generally used to. I can’t say if Nightdive Studios, who a handling the Dark Forces remake, are the best studio to do this, but they do mostly deal in remakes of older titles and most of those seem to have come out pretty well so it wouldn’t be a terrible idea.
Modern remakes of Star Wars games have certainly been a trend as I stated at the beginning, and it’s totally possible that Star Wars: Empire at War is on the list as it was received very well at release and is fondly remembered. But if it’s not, it should be highly considered for a refresh and release on modern platforms (maybe even for mobile as RTS games can translate to that pretty well if done correctly) to give it a chance to find a whole new audience.
That’s it for today, I’ll probably slip in another post by the end of the month so see ya real soon!
