Spider-Man 2 needs to include some Miles Morales villains
Insomniac’s follow-up to their stellar superhero epic, Spider-Man 2, is coming very soon (51 days as of this writing to be exact). One thing is being made very clear from the outset, this is both a Peter Parker story and a Miles Morales story. Odds are Peter will get a majority of the story but Miles obviously plays a hugely significant part in this game.
The first Spider-Man had a wealth of villains both classic and new, but also some more obscure ones. Spider-Man: Miles Morales featured a pretty decent selection of villains as well, but there was one problem: not a single one of those was an original Miles Morales villain. Even the primary antagonist was just a new take on The Tinkerer, a very old Spider-Man villain.
We already know the two biggest antagonists in Spider-Man 2 are Kraven and Venom, but obviously, that leaves room for a lot of other villains, and frankly, it’d be boring to rehash the same villains we just beat in the last game. Granted, there are some classic Spider-Man villains that weren’t in the first game that could still make appearances in the sequel, but if you want to make Miles a significant part of the story, he can’t just be the guy also fighting Peter’s rogue’s gallery, he really needs a couple of adversaries of his own, possibly to build to an even more significant role in an almost assured third entry down the line.
Granted, even in the comics Miles doesn’t have a huge roster of villains that aren’t someone Spider-Man has faced before or just a slight twist on a familiar character, but there are several that could easily be included and even used to plant future seeds such as Frost Pharoah, The Assessor and Ultimatum.
And we’ve seen that Insomniac is pretty good at taking Spider-Man villains and putting their own unique spin on them while keeping them in the spirit of the original version they were based on, there’s really no reason they couldn’t do new interpretations in Spider-Man 2 that fit that universe. They don’t have to be part of the main story (especially if say they’ll possibly play a bigger role in a later entry in the series), there are plenty of side activities you could use them for or future DLC (which is not announced as of now, but it’s almost definitely happening)
Miles Morales is a great character in his own right and if he’s ever going to be seen as more than Peter’s sidekick in the videogame space he really needs his own story with his own villains alongside Peter’s. Spider-Man could be a very long-running series and it would make sense for Miles to make the journey from mentee to sidekick to partner to the main character having his own full series of games that aren’t just more bite-sized versions of “proper” Spider-Man titles.
That’s all I have for today, I probably will have more posts relating to Spider-Man 2 as we come closer to the release in mid-October but I’ll certainly space them out some so this isn’t just a blog about Spider-Man for the next month and a half. Otherwise, see ya real soon!
