Nintendo Switch Online feels incomplete without historic Star Wars Games…
We just had the first full direct for the Nintendo Switch 2! Some genuinely exciting things such as a new Donkey Kong game, some spiritual Bloodborne successor from From Software and the long-awaited addition of Gamecube games to the Nintendo Switch Online offering.
However, I can’t help but feel like something key has been missing and especially felt absent from this announcement, and that’s Star Wars. The Nintendo Switch 2 won’t be completely absent of Star Wars games, Star Wars Outlaws was shown in a sizzle reel as coming to the console though no release date was given. I’d think it’d be not long after the console launch if for nothing else to take advantage of what will be a relatively small library of newer games.
Through the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and Gamecube era, Nintendo has had a pretty close association with Star Wars on their consoles. Fondly remembered games, specifically the Super Star Wars series and Rogue Squadron games, were intrinsically tied to those consoles and considered among the best in the respective console’s library. And these are non-existent in any of the Nintendo Switch Online offerings.
Now granted, these are third-party titles with licensing issues, which may present some barriers, but at least some of these games are available on other platforms so it’s certainly possible. And Disney, who owns Star Wars, seems on good terms with Nintendo. So it doesn’t seem like it’s an impossibility to get these games, especially the Rogue Squadron titles, added to the Nintendo Switch online library.
The Nintendo Switch Online library offers a lot of games you can’t find on other platforms, and that’s really cool. It would be cooler if they could work out a deal with some of the more fondly-remembered third-party licensed games that a lot of us played on these older consoles to put those games on this service, especially the Star Wars ones. Hopefully it’s simply a matter of when, not if…
That’s it for today, but I already have a couple of posts planned for next week, including a full review of Disney Villains Cursed Cafe, so see ya real soon!
