Marvel’s Midnight Suns: Is this the end?

Marvel's Midnight Suns finally came out for last-gen platforms this past week, arriving on PlayStation 4 & Xbox One, along with its fourth and likely final DLC featuring arguably Marvel’s most powerful X-Man, Storm along with mostly wrapping up the vampire storyline that started with Deadpool DLC released earlier this year.

The DLC itself is fine, Storm is definitely a potentially hugely powerful ally for the group though she starts off most battles at a disadvantage as many of her cards get a nice bonus if you don’t play them for a round. The story itself as I stated earlier brings to a conclusion the fight with Sin and Dracula which is good because the previous DLC Morbius really felt like filler material. There are still some unanswered questions brought about by the DLC, the biggest being that you know, Peter Parker struck a deal with Mephisto to save Eddie Brock’s life and we haven’t seen any fallout from that at all, did we just drop that?

The biggest issue, and one that happens all too often, is likely that we won’t get more DLC or new adventures of the Midnight Suns in a sequel because frankly, the game didn’t sell very well. We are kind of lucky we got all four pieces of DLC because it’s certainly not unheard of to just abandon DLC plans for a game that hasn’t sold all that well. This is really a shame, because not only is Marvel’s Midnight Suns isn’t just a really good game, it’s a game that really thinks outside the box in terms of what a Marvel game can be.

Marvel games that aren’t character action titles are really few and far between. We have several games coming in the near future featuring the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, and Black Panther and those all are character action games. Maybe they’ll do something unique in that specific genre, but there’s nothing quite like Marvel’s Midnight Suns in that arena, and I can’t think of many turn-based strategy games that have a card system and pull it off anywhere near this well either. And I’ve repeatedly stated that generally, I do not like games where you rely on a deck, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is an extremely rare exception because they make sure you’re rarely if ever out of options.

I would really love to have another full-blown adventure with the Midnight Suns. But beyond that, I want more Marvel games to think outside the box on what they can be. They don’t all need to be 3rd-person character action games that while well-made and produced, kinda feel samey and could just as easily have been an Uncharted game or a God of War game, or an Assassin’s Creed game. Nothing is wrong with those but give me a reason to play this beyond the only difference being it’s a comic book character instead of an original video game character.

That’s all I have for today, I don’t know exactly when but I will have at least one more post before the end of this month, and there is a PlayStation showcase reportedly happening by the end of the month if there’s enough out of that to write a blog entry for (it would probably have to be more than just Spider-Man 2) I most certainly will. See ya real soon and please, buy Marvel’s Midnight Suns it’s fantastic.
