Marvel’s Avengers: Roadmap? Where we’re going, we don’t need a roadmap…

“Roadmap” is a pretty loaded term in the gaming industry, but also a kinda necessary one for any game expected to have significant and ongoing updates, especially major content drops be they new characters to play, major events, etc. A roadmap lets your player base know there is a plan in place and can keep them around waiting for that content drop as well as bringing back lapsed players and maybe even some new ones if the game starts getting some fresh hype.

But a roadmap can also be a curse in that while it’s nice to have a plan and stick to it, development on a game can face many unseen hurdles and that was before throwing an ongoing pandemic into the mix that while it seems to really be slowing down, is never truly going away…

Marvel’s Avengers had a 2021 roadmap and pretty much kept to it. We got new heroes, several new content storylines, and a pretty big revamp and streamlining of the game. Pretty significant stuff. Avengers has no doubt had a rocky road since its release but through 2021 you can’t say they weren’t making major strides to improve it.

But the last really significant content update was War For Wakanda back in August of last year (unless you have the game on Playstation then you also got Spider-Man as an additional hero in December, but he didn’t really add anything significant content-wise to the game), and while there certainly had been talks of a 2022 roadmap we are four months into the year with no such map in sight.

That’s because, as it turns out, there just is no roadmap. That doesn’t mean Marvel’s Avengers is no longer getting significant updates, in fact, there is a pretty massive game revamp happening in the next patch and sometime after that in the following patch, we will actually get a new hero in Jane Foster wielding the power of Thor as she has in the comics and will be in the upcoming MCU film Thor: Love and Thunder (which does lead to speculation that future heroes will tie-in to MCU shows and movies) sometime in the near future.

But with no roadmap in site, does that mean Marvel’s Avengers is actually nearing its endgame and it’ll just chug along until Square Enix finally decides to pull the plug in the near future? It’s certainly possible, but this also allows the development team not to be chained to any particular long-term path, which could definitely ultimately be beneficial. As we stumble through year two of Marvel’s Avengers, only time will really tell. I could see it going with another year of updates, which may even be at the whim of Marvel and/or Disney depending on the deal.

As for me, I have been playing Avengers off and on this year as it is still a good game to just chill and listen to a podcast or two, but not nearly as much as I was playing last year thus far and if that trend continues, who knows maybe I’ll find a new podcast game in the coming months…
