Forget the Gargoyles Remaster, we need a Genesis X-Men Collection…

I’m not really trying to throw one game under the bus here, but the pending release of the Gargoyles remaster is still just bizarre to me. Sure, Gargoyles was a fantastic series for its first two seasons (the less said about The Goliath Chronicles, the better) and the game would be a good fit in a collection of Disney games, especially Disney Genesis games which we have access to a couple thanks to things like the Disney Classics Games Collection but not that many and there’s a pretty rich history of Disney games on Sega’s most successful console (especially if you expand it to include things they own now like Marvel and Indiana Jones).

But on its own, the Gargoyles game for the Sega Genesis is a rather odd choice because frankly it’s kinda mediocre, not to mention this remaster is supposedly still coming later this year and we have yet to see one bit of footage of it.

You know what from the Genesis is fondly remembered and really deserves a re-release (besides Quackshot which apparently John Drake is bugged incessantly about)? The X-Men games. Both the original game and its sequel, Clone Wars, set a really good standard and a high bar for licensed action games. They looked great, played really well and faithfully represented the IP they were adapting. It’s more than you’d expect from a licensed video game in the 90s.

If there was one complaint about the X-Men games for Genesis, it’s that they were pretty hard, punishingly so. And in the days of cartridge gaming where you might get a password but action games didn’t usually have save files that was a big ask to finish the game in a session or two. Another reason to bring these classics to modern platforms would be to have a much more digestible way to play them whether it’s through a rewind feature, unlimited lives, the ability to turn on some kind of cheats, or all of the above like many remasters of older classics have and these games would greatly benefit from such features.

Also, the X-Men are just around the corner from a potentially huge resurgence. Mutants are being slowly sprinkled into the MCU, Deadpool 3 is coming sometime in the near future (when sort of varies due to various strikes at the time of this writing) and unless it gets a big delay there is a huge game starring Wolverine coming from Insomniac later this year. A remaster of these classic games could not come at a better time.

To be fair unless it’s a buggy mess (or some ridiculous price) I will probably buy the Gargoyles remaster on day one cause hey I collect Disney games (and probably for review as well) but as previously stated I just feel it’s a such an odd choice to put out as a stand-alone product when there are other better options, and these two games would arguably be the best from at least the Genesis library of games Disney could license for a remaster.

That’s it for today, I wouldn’t rule out another post this weekend depending on my schedule but at latest I’ll put out something ASAP next week so see ya real soon!
