Don’t buy Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II on Nintendo Switch just yet…

Hey, it’s great that a ton of older Star Wars games are getting ported to modern consoles these days, especially the Nintendo Switch where a lot of these classics feel right at home and are a blast to play portably as long as the port is done justice. The latest in the re-release line coming to Nintendo Switch next week is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and while eventually, it will certainly be a very worthy addition to your Nintendo Switch library, there’s a good reason not to buy it right away when it comes out on the console next week and it’s not waiting for a sale.

You see, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out in 2003. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords came out the following year in December of 2004. That’s a hell of a quick turnaround. It was even handled by a completely different developer as Bioware worked on the first game and Obisidian Entertainment worked on the second. Now, Obsidian Entertainment is a fantastic RPG studio, but as you’d imagine, a lot of hard cuts and choices had to be made in order to get a sequel out in less than 18 months.

As such, a lot was indeed left on the cutting room floor, and the initial release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is considered a solid but notably flawed game, especially in the story department.

That would probably have been the end of the story if not for an especially passionate and dedicated modding community. Completely through fan-based efforts, the Restored Content Mod was made. As the name might suggest, it integrated lost dialogue and story bits, and even cleaned up the ending but also included some significant bug fixes. This was all done by fans. The mod got official recognition and is now easily available to integrate into the PC version of the game.

The good news: The Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will have this content as free DLC. The bad news: it won’t be when the game releases on the system next week. We don’t currently have a release date.

Now granted, this restored content Mod/DLC isn’t comparable to something like the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3. It’s not something that will drastically change your experience, the game isn’t unplayable without it. In fact, the game is still pretty good with the base package. But, it’s not complete. And this isn’t some post main story stuff, it’s integrated into the core game, and your experience will be different.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will be worth buying for your Nintendo Switch, I say this as someone who already owns it on Xbox and iPad and fully intends to buy it a third time on Nintendo’s hybrid console. But I will not be buying it next week when it first releases, and I really don’t think anyone else should either, just wait for the DLC to get the full experience.

That’s all for today, but it’s a huge gaming week next as several showcases are happening. There may be lots of Disney game-related news, there might be none. I’ll likely do a post early in the week on what I hope to see and then due to my schedule probably do a post as early as possible the following week. See ya real soon!
