Disney was sorely lacking during the Summer of many Game Fests…
A lot of cool games across various showcases for various platforms were shown in the last week or so. But aside from a couple ofknown heavy hitters and one really nice surprise, there was a real lack of stuff from Disney and its assorted IP when there was quite a bit of stuff in the last couple of years.
Let’s start with the couple good notes. It seemed like a near impossibility that you would ever play one, much less all of the classic Capcom Marvel fighting games on a modern platform, so seeing Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection during the Nintendo Direct this week was a total surprise and a really pleasant one. Though I probably am getting it on Nintendo Switch I amglad it is also coming to other platforms as well (though Xbox seems like an odd omission even if it’s a distant third in the console race).
But where were a couple other things like this? A Remaster, re-releases, a collection, or something else in any other showcase, including the Limited Run Games one that happened a day ago, would be prime for this. This makes things like last year’s Gargoyles Remastered even more confounding because far more deserving games are still stuck on ancient hardware.
It’s cool that Disney Illusion Island got a free update, but I feel like there should be more here, like announcing a port to either PC or Mobile. It’s a great game that deserves to be served to an even wider audience, which would increase chances for some kind of follow-up. The game is presumably doing well if they are even bothering with a free update this late after launch.
But really aside from seeing a little bit more of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Star Wars Outlaws, there just wasn’t much else. Nothing from the many announced Marvel games in development, no cool small releases (no follow-up to Tron: Identity?) Not even some mobile game like Disney Speedstorm that plays great but is buried under a mind-boggling amount of microtransactions.
There is still one more big show coming up where we could see some cool Disney games, this year’s D23 Expo, which while definitely more geared towards theme parks and movies, has had an increasing focus on games the last couple of years. Disney could be holding back some things for that expo. I certainly hope so, as Disney videogame fans have been served pretty well over the last couple of years.
That’s it for today, but I should be back on Monday with a new post, so see ya real soon!
