5 additional Disney classics that should be offered as DLC
The Disney Classic Games Collection is a pretty perfect release. It collects games you fondly remember in a great package with new features and makes them more playable than ever in a number of ways. This is good because some of them really don’t hold up. It seemed like too much to hope for that Disney, notorious for not really caring about their back catalog of games, even the really good ones, would ever do anything else with it.
But lo and behold, the Disney of today seems perfectly keen to the idea of re-releasing old games and people giving them money for it, even to the extent that two years after release, this already great collection is not only getting the Super Nintendo version of Aladdin, which was made by Capcom so that required cooperation of a completely different game company that the other games, but also several versions of The Jungle Book. Making a fantastic collection already better.
So clearly, the door is open for more games to be added. Maybe they’ll save more for a second collection, maybe this will be the end of it (hopefully not), but with this brief window of optimism here are five classic Disney games I’d love to see added as optional DLC for the Disney Classics Game Collection:
#5. Goof Troop
Simply put, Goof Troop is a pretty solid game. Aside from the fact it stars Goofy and his son Max, there isn’t much that actually ties it to the series, but hey there are only a few games starring arguably one of Disney’s greatest classic characters. It’s also got historical significance, being one of the first games Shinji Mikami, the creator of the Resident Evil franchise, worked on.
Goof Troop could benefit a lot from adding online co-op but honestly an HD port with the same bells and whistles all the other games get would be enough and you’d have a very fun puzzle game.
#4. Mickey Mania
Mickey Mania is a game that celebrates the history of the most beloved mouse in the world like no other. It has levels based on classic shorts and movies that are animated beautifully. But the real kicker is that there are several versions that have something unique to them, and that’s the kind of thing Disney Classic Games Collection excels at.
There’s content that is just simply not in the SNES version compared to the Genesis one. And both the PlayStation and Sega CD versions have extra content and give Mickey spoken dialogue. It’d be great if this was all packaged into one release as DLC or as part of a second collection of games that I could just easily purchase on a modern platform for an affordable price rather than trying to track down horrendously overpriced copies on eBay…
#3. Quackshot
Donald Duck actually had a pretty decent amount of good games in the 8 and 16-bit eras, but Quackshot was arguably the best. Definitely a spiritual successor to the NES Ducktales games, this game had Scrooge’s nephew also globetrotting to exotic locales in search of buried treasure. It’s a really good, gorgeous 16-bit classic and deserves an HD modern release on current platforms. Also not enough games starring Donald Duck and while this wouldn’t be a new one, it’d be something.
#2. World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
The Illusion series is a classic series starring Disney’s famous mouse. There are four games in the series, but only one, Castle of Illusion, has seen any sort of re-release in the last couple of generations. It’s real shame because all of the games are great, you could easily just have a collection with just Illusion games and it’d be worth it. But If I were to pick one title from the series to bring to a modern Disney collection of classic games, it would be World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
And not just because it also stars Donald Duck. World of Illusion combined great platforming, incredible animation, and the ability to play with a friend which no other game in the series has the option of. It’s arguable that Castle of Illusion is the best game in the series and hey you can grab that on PC for fairly cheap, but World of Illusion runs a close second and should be a necessary inclusion in any collection of Disney classic games.
#1. The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck
As much as a collection of classic games should be for fondly remembering classics of peoples’ youth, it should also be a chance to discover games most never got around to. The sheer fact that the Sega Master System and Game Gear are mostly forgotten consoles that even in their prime were nowhere near sales of their competitors in most parts of the world means not a whole lot of people have ever gotten to play one of the best games starring Donald Duck, The Lucky Dime Caper, originally released for the Sega Master System and later re-released on the Game Gear.
The fact of the matter is that most of the games in the Disney Classic Games Collection look great and you might even remember them fondly, but they actually were not great games. The games on this list are all better by a significant margin and The Lucky Dime Caper is among the best, so hopefully, it and all these other games on the list get some sort of modern release at some point. Either as add-ons to this collection, by themselves, or as part of another collection entirely. Disney seems very open to plunging their videogame vault as of late, so let’s hope they keep it up.
